A butterfly weft is a hybrid hair extension designed to combine the thinness of a hand-tied weft with the durability of a machine weft. It’s currently a "best-of-both-worlds" favorite for stylists because it offers a seamless look without some of the fragility of older methods.
Here is the breakdown of what makes it unique:
1. The Design
The name comes from its unique "wings" or folded design. Unlike traditional wefts that have a thick seam at the top, a butterfly weft is ultra-slim and flat. It is often made with a thin PU (polyurethane) strip or a specialized reinforced stitch that allows it to lie flush against the scalp.
2. Key Advantages
Customizable (The Big Win): Unlike hand-tied wefts—which unravel and fall apart if you cut them—butterfly wefts can be cut at any point along the track. This allows stylists to customize the width to fit your head perfectly without using glue or folding the ends.
No "Return" Hair: Traditional machine wefts have a "beard" (short hairs at the top of the seam) that can sometimes itch or poke the scalp. Butterfly wefts are usually constructed without this, making them much more comfortable.
Durability: They are sturdier than hand-tied wefts, meaning they shed less and can often be reused for several salon visits (usually lasting 6–9 months with proper care).
Lightweight: Because they are so thin, they put less tension on the natural hair, making them a great option for people with fine or thinning hair.
