While they look nearly identical to the naked eye, the choice between a Genius Weft and a Butterfly Weft usually comes down to the specific construction material and the "fold" of the hair.
Both are considered "hybrid" wefts designed to replace the bulky machine weft and the fragile hand-tied weft.
1. Construction and Material
Genius Weft: This is widely considered the "gold standard" for thinness. It uses a specialized, ultra-thin machine-stitch technology that results in a seam only 0.4mm to 0.6mm thick. It feels almost like a thin piece of thread.
Butterfly Weft: This often utilizes a slightly different top-piece construction—sometimes incorporating a very thin layer of PU (polyurethane) or a "winged" fold. This makes it slightly more "flat" against the head compared to the "string-like" feel of the Genius weft, but it can be a fraction of a millimeter thicker depending on the brand.
2. The "Beard" (Return Hair)
Genius Weft: Has absolutely no return hair (the short, prickly hairs at the top of a weft). This makes it incredibly comfortable for people with sensitive scalps.
Butterfly Weft: Also eliminates the traditional itchy "beard," but it does so by folding the hair in a "butterfly" or "wing" style at the seam. It is designed to be just as smooth, though some cheaper versions of butterfly wefts may have a tiny bit of fringe.
3. Customization (Cutting the Track)
Both wefts are famous for being cut-friendly. This is their biggest advantage over hand-tied wefts.
Genius Weft: Can be cut anywhere along the track without shedding or unraveling.
Butterfly Weft: Can also be cut anywhere. However, because some butterfly wefts use a reinforced "wing" edge, the corners stay a bit flatter after a cut than the Genius weft, which can sometimes have a tiny "pointy" end if not trimmed precisely.
