Keratin hair extensions (often called K-tips, fusion, or bonded extensions) are a "permanent" enhancement method where individual strands of hair are attached to your natural hair using keratin-based polymer glue.
Unlike wefts, which are long tracks of hair, K-tips are applied strand-by-strand, making them one of the most versatile and natural-looking options available.
The "bond" at the top of the extension is made of a synthetic protein that mimics the keratin found in human hair.
The Process: A stylist uses a specialized heat tool to soften the keratin bond.
The Attachment: The softened bond is wrapped around a small section of your natural hair and "rolled" or "pinched" to seal it.
The Result: Once the keratin cools, it hardens into a tiny, clear, or color-matched attachment point about the size of a grain of rice.
2. Key Advantages
360° Movement: Because they are individual strands, the hair moves naturally. You can put your hair in high ponytails or top knots without bulky tracks showing.
Customization: Stylists can cut the bonds into "micro-bonds" for extremely thin areas, like the hairline or temples.
Longevity: They have the longest wear-time of any method, typically lasting 3 to 5 months before they need to be removed and replaced.
Water Friendly: They are generally more resistant to sweat and water than tape-ins, making them a favorite for athletes or swimmers.
3. Important Considerations
Application Time: Since it is a strand-by-strand process, expect to be in the salon chair for 3 to 6 hours, depending on how much hair you are adding.
Non-Reusable: Generally, K-tips are a "one-and-done" method. When they are removed (using an alcohol-based solution to break down the bond), the old bonds are cut off. While some stylists can "re-tip" them, most clients purchase new hair for every application.
Heat Sensitivity: You have to be careful when using flat irons or curling wands near the roots, as direct high heat can melt the bonds and cause the extensions to slide out.
